Commitment to Diversity
On Monday, Sept. 23, the Tamalpais Union High School District (TUHSD) had the first Stop and Learn of the 2024-2025 school year regarding anti-Semitism and Islamophobia. Speakers Karen Stiller, Senior Director of Jewish Affairs from the Islamic Network Group (ING), and Maha Elgenaidi, the Executive Director of the ING, spoke to students through a Zoom Webinar to understand anti-Semitism and Islamophobia.

As a journalist, I am committed to covering stories that highlight diversity, inclusion, and education. One example of this commitment was a 24-hour news story I wrote about a Stop and Learn event at our school focused on antisemitism and Islamophobia. The event created a space for students to confront bias, learn about different faiths, and engage in open, respectful dialogue. I worked quickly and thoughtfully to cover not just the facts, but the deeper importance of bringing these conversations into our school community.

Covering this event reinforced for me how journalism can be a powerful tool for building empathy and awareness. I made it a priority to accurately represent the voices of those who spoke out against hate and to show why this education matters. Through stories like this, I hope to continue using journalism to amplify diverse perspectives, encourage understanding, and foster a stronger, more inclusive environment both within and beyond our school.
