The reality of declining enrollment is showing its effects on the Student-Led Anti-Racist Movement course
The reason that I wrote this article is because SLAM is a very important class at Redwood that helps educate students and is a diverse course that all students can take. I knew that I needed to write this article quickly and for it to go in the paper because I hoped that it would bring light to the declining enrollment rates that are hitting the class and would cause students to enroll into the class for it to not be taken out of the course selection.

Board of Trustees discusses Yondr phone pouch implementation with community input during well-attended meeting
Ben and I didn't want to impede on a different article that was being written about the Board Meeting discussion over the Yondr phone pouches, so instead, we recorded all of the people that spoke and the responses of the board members to create an informational infographic where if you were to press on the blue dot about the person's head, it would show a quote of their response over the Yondr pouches.

Understanding anti-Semitism and Islamophobia: TUHSD’s first Stop and Learn of the 2024-2025 school year
I thought that this Stop and Learn was a very important article to cover in a faster manner than 24-hours because of the lack of attendance and also the topic that it was covering. I recorded the entirety of the Stop and Learn for quotes of the speakers and researched about the two speakers for more information on them and the work that they do.

TUHSD closes all high schools due to bomb threat
I was honored to be a part of creating the very fastly produced story by getting two interviews from students at Archie Williams and Tamalpais High Schools and came out with an article that was purely factual and spread the truth to the community in a speedy and truthful manner.

Roots Down unites parents and seniors in laughter and in tears
When I heard about the opportunity to write a 24-hour during Nonfiction, I jumped on the idea before I even knew what I would be covering. Leina helped me take photos and allowed me to do the photo captions and write the little write-up, but it was fun to work with a Barkie and get some real 24-hr experience.

The parking puzzle: How Redwood addresses student parking needs
This was the first article that I wrote for the Bark. I worked for many hours with Kate DeForrest to get it glossy and up on the web. It was a very informational piece with an interview from the man that is working to construct the back lot parking.

The Bayon siblings break decades-old records
I saw an opening to write a story on the Bayon siblings and I took it and ran. Antonio broke the pole vaulting school record 3 days before glossy and then his sister broke the 100 meter dash record the next day, so I worked timely to get interviews with both of them, writing it, getting the piece fully glossy, and then laying it out on InDesign.

Sports Spotlight: Charlotte Philkill masters the pool, the trails and the dojo
There is just something about writing a Sports Spotlight that is so special. Charlotte was one of the sweetest people to interview and had the most action packed life to write about. Writing this story was super fun to do and her expression when she saw it in the paper was amazing.

Boys’ varsity soccer conquers rival Tam in a nail-biting match
I had never reported on soccer or saw the boys' varsity team play, but I knew that I had to report on the game against one of their biggest rivals. The camera and the lighting on the field weren't very cooperative, but they ended up looking pretty good and the interviews with the players were very genuine.

Sports Spotlight: Maya Saibel shoots for the stars on and off the court
This was the first sports spotlight that I got to do and I was so astonished when I first had the interview with Maya. Right when the interview started, I knew it was going to be a very inspiring story. Maya is one of the most devoted athletes there is at Redwood so writing this story was very rewarding to do and had a big impact on how I wrote other sports spotlights in the future.

Boys’ varsity water polo heads to the NCS Division 1 finals after an astounding win against San Ramon Valley
This story was a very action packed one to write. I knew that this game was going to be a good one so there was no way that I could have not passed up the offer to write it. It was very fun to make a stats infographic to go along with the article and just write another story and get it published on the web.

Photo Essay: Boys’ varsity water polo defeats Archie Williams in overtime thriller to win MCAL championship
This was the first 24-hr opportunity that I took as a nonfiction student. This story was very fun to write and there was a lot of action within the game to write about. It was also very fun to be able to take photos with the Bark cameras for my first time and get to enjoy the feeling of being a journalist.

Two alums make waves by revolutionizing wetsuits with FERAL
I learned about this wetsuit company when I was reading the article in the Marin IJ. When I found out that they were Redwood alumni, I knew I had to get in contact with them and set up an interview. These two men were truly an inspiration and taught me and the readers of the article so much about the possibilities of creating something new and following your true passion.

Joshua Spiegelman tells his story from Redwood to Roam Burgers
This story was by far the most rewarding story that I ever wrote. Joshua's marketing team reached out to be during the summer and wanted to let me know that he was a Redwood alumnus and he was opening a Roam Burgers at Town Center. For publicity reasons, they wanted me to write an article so that the restaurant could get more foot traffic, but this article quickly turned into anything but publicity. The interview I had with him was one of the sweetest interviews that I have ever conducted. He felt so honored that I was asking him questions about himself and the work that he does. He started tearing up which made me feel so good about myself and the work that I do, knowing that I am making people feel good about themselves and their work.

Celebrating 40 years at the Marin Rowing Association: A glimpse into the life of Sandy Armstrong
The reason to love a sport is about more than just the technique or talent. Often, it is the coach who helps push and guide everyone along the way, which is another reason why sports can have a special place in someone’s heart. For many athletes at the Marin Rowing Association (MRA), Sandy Armstrong, executive director and girls under 19 (U19) coach, makes that impact on many people’s lives.

Balancing time and traditions while navigating the holiday season with divorced parents
I have always been very interested in writing a story that was a bit of a touchy subject. This story helped me learn new things about sensitive reporting and how to conduct interviews that weren't the easiest for the interviewee to sit through, but I took this article very slowly and let it develop to make sure that I was being informational without making people feel uncomfortable.

Podcast
Unspoken Tensions
I am always into trying new things, and a podcast is exactly that. For the election edition, it seemed like more stories were already taken that I would have been open to writing, so instead of writing, I asked Annie if she wanted to make a podcast with me about how to respect others' political views in a county where respect and politics don't usually go together.

Press pass revoked: Trump’s restrictions on the media
This was the most passionate article that I have written so far in my Bark career. I reached out on a limb for an interview with the reporter from the Associated Press that has been reporting on the Trump Administration and the silencing of the press and somehow got an interview with him. This article helped me learn so much about the current political climate and the experiences of those who are living within Trump's direct policies.
